Homeopathy: the treatment where your body heals itself

When we get ill, it is common practice to seek help from professionals and get medication to help us feel better. However, there is a practice that has been going on for the past 250 years that promotes the art of self-healing. Enter homeopathy, where your body is encouraged to heal itself.

Founded by Samuel Hahnemann in the 1790s in Germany, homeopathy is a holistic form of treatment that uses highly diluted substances which could cause the body to heal itself. Homeopathy uses the principle of treating ‘like with like’ brought forward by the ‘father of medicine’, Hippocrates. While its practice is questioned by professionals in the medical field, millions of people seek help from homeopaths when they find that the side effects of medicine are worsening their condition.

Remedies in homeopathy use natural substances like plants and minerals to cure ailments. Hahnemann believed that if a substance is diluted thoroughly and repeatedly, the substance that causes illness could be reversed into a cure for certain symptoms. For example, coffee is known to make us feel jittery, so homeopaths will use a small dose of coffee beans to relieve nervousness.

Unlike allopathic medical treatments, homeopathy lacks substantial scientific support. In fact, NHS England ceased funding homeopathy in 2017 due to insufficient evidence of its efficacy to warrant its costs. Nevertheless, this treatment is still in use today, as it offers many advantages that conventional medications do not provide. For starters, homeopathy is an almost entirely safe treatment method, utilizing non-toxic remedies. Additionally, it is sustainable because it relies on natural resources that are gentle for both patients and the environment. Furthermore, homeopathy does not adhere to a one-size-fits-all approach; each treatment is tailored to the individual, meaning that even if two patients present similar symptoms, they may receive different remedies.

For many, homeopathy also represents a sense of empowerment, as it encourages individuals to take an active role in their healing journey. This approach fosters a deeper connection between the patient and the practitioner, focusing on long-term wellness rather than merely addressing symptoms. Additionally, the gentle nature of homeopathic remedies make it suitable for all age groups, including children and the elderly.

Wondering if you could still consume prescribed pills while undergoing homeopathy treatment? The answer is yes. Homeopathy could be used alongside conventional drugs, says the Society of Homeopaths website, as it will not interfere with the medications prescribed by doctors. However, it’s essential to inform both your homeopath and your doctor about all treatments you are undergoing to ensure a holistic approach to your health. Open communication helps avoid potential conflicts between therapies and ensures that your overall treatment plan is safe and effective for your specific needs.
