Emma Gomez, Founder of Tumeric tea brand, Emaya Pure Life spends much of her spare time in Sussex blending herbs for her award winning teas in her family home. Winning Silver for the The Veggie Awards in 2023 and finalists for the Great British Food Awards in 2022, Emma prides herself on creating a premium product by blending each herb herself and sourcing the best ingredients.
Emaya Pure Life was born out of Gomez’s need for effective, natural remedies. Her journey began with health challenges in 2014, after she suffered from a frozen shoulder that left her in significant pain. She said, “In 2014, I had an injury at work which gave me a frozen shoulder. As a result of the frozen shoulder, I was coming down the stairs at my friend’s house, I lost my balance on my left foot and I fell down the stairs.”
It was after this fall that Emma found herself on a deep healing journey. She sought the help of private medical therapists and eventually ended up on strong anti-inflammatory and pain medication. Unfortunately, the medication didn’t agree with Emma which led her to seek natural remedies instead. With an inherited background of cooking from her Grandmother Beverly Robinson, who Emma tells me was a ‘pastry chef for the Queen’, and her Grandmother in Spain, who was an intuitive healer and herbalist, Emma decided to go back to her roots and call on the knowledge of her early ancestry to help create her own cure.
After months of research, she stumbled across the natural anti-inflammatory herb turmeric – Lakadong turmeric specifically, known for its high curcumin content. She started experimenting with turmeric and other anti-inflammatory ingredients, aiming to create a product that was not only beneficial but also enjoyable to consume. Her first successful blend combined turmeric with moringa, ginger, and chai spices, resulting in a delicious and potent anti-inflammatory elixir. This discovery was the catalyst for creating her own tea blends.
“I found there were so many different types of turmeric out there, Lakadong turmeric has a very high curcumin at about 7 – 12%. So I started taking that myself. Then I started blending it and I came up with something that was really delicious.”
Not only was the blend delicious but after a few months of consuming her elixir, Emma realised that she could now get her arm behind her back again – something she couldn’t do before taking the blend. This was the moment she knew she was onto something.
Gomez emphasizes the importance of using fresh, high-quality ingredients. She personally grinds spices like long pepper and cardamom to ensure maximum potency and flavor. The process involves blending these spices with turmeric and coconut oil, which helps the curcumin in the turmeric to be absorbed more effectively by the body. Emma now sells her teas at food festivals and online to a loyal customer base.
